Global South vs NATO: Hypocrisy of War Rhetoric?

NATO's bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999 lasted 78 days, resulting in an estimated 500 civilian deaths and widespread infrastructure destruction, according to Human Rights Watch. The campaign was conducted without a UN Security Council mandate, as Russia and China opposed it. This event is repeatedly invoked in Global South diplomatic circles (e.g., at the 2022 Shangri-La Dialogue) to argue that the West's current defense of Ukraine's sovereignty is inconsistent. or nations like Serbia, China, and India, the Kosovo precedent demonstrates that NATO will bypass international law when it serves its interests, undermining its moral authority on Russia's invasion.
